Bangladesh has reaffirmed its close friendship and growing partnership with the Maldives as Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman attended the Maldives’ 61st Independence Day celebrations in Malé as a special guest of the Maldivian government. The visit underscored the longstanding diplomatic relationship between the two South Asian nations while highlighting their shared commitment to regional cooperation, environmental sustainability, and climate action.

The Independence Day Parade was held at Republic Square in the Maldivian capital on July 26, where Dr. Rahman was formally welcomed by Maldivian Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam upon his arrival. The ceremonial event brought together government officials, military representatives, and invited dignitaries to commemorate the island nation’s independence with displays of national pride and unity.

The parade featured an impressive ceremonial march-past by various branches of the Maldives National Defence Force. Military personnel showcased their discipline, professionalism, and preparedness through synchronized performances and ceremonial displays. The event reflected the Maldives’ rich heritage and celebrated the country’s journey over the past six decades as an independent nation.

Following the military parade, Dr. Rahman attended a colorful cultural programme that highlighted the Maldives’ diverse traditions, history, and artistic heritage. Performances by local artists celebrated the country’s unique identity and cultural richness, while the festivities concluded with a spectacular fireworks display that illuminated the skies over Malé.

As part of his official visit, Dr. Rahman also participated in an environmental initiative by planting a Christina (Syzygium campanulatum) tree at Lonuziyaarai Park in Malé. The tree-planting ceremony formed part of the “Five Million Trees Project,” an ambitious national campaign launched by Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to expand the country’s green cover and promote environmental conservation.

The ceremony was attended by Maldivian Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam and Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Ali Shareef, reflecting the importance the Maldivian government places on environmental protection and sustainable development.

During the event, Dr. Rahman praised President Muizzu’s initiative, describing it as a meaningful contribution to combating climate change and preserving the environment. He also highlighted Bangladesh’s own large-scale afforestation efforts, noting that the government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, has undertaken an ambitious programme to plant 250 million trees over the next five years.

According to the foreign minister, the environmental initiatives pursued by both Bangladesh and the Maldives demonstrate a shared vision for protecting natural resources, addressing the challenges posed by climate change, and ensuring a healthier planet for future generations. As two climate-vulnerable nations, Bangladesh and the Maldives have consistently advocated stronger international cooperation on environmental issues and sustainable development.

Dr. Rahman also recalled the legacy of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, highlighting his initiative to establish extensive groves of Azadirachta indica (neem) trees on the plains of Arafat in Saudi Arabia. These plantations, popularly known as the “Zia Trees,” remain a symbol of Bangladesh’s historical contribution to environmental conservation beyond its borders.

The visit carries broader diplomatic significance as Bangladesh and the Maldives continue to strengthen cooperation in areas such as trade, tourism, climate resilience, education, and regional security. High-level exchanges between the two countries have become increasingly important in fostering closer political and economic ties while addressing shared regional challenges.

Dr. Rahman’s participation in the Maldives’ Independence Day celebrations reflects the warm and friendly relations that have long existed between Dhaka and Malé. His presence as a special guest not only honored the Maldives on its national day but also reinforced Bangladesh’s commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation and expanding collaboration on issues of mutual interest.
