CEC says national election schedule to be announced two months in advance

News Desk

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of Bangladesh, AMM Nasir Uddin, stated on June 15, that the schedule for the upcoming national elections will be announced 55 to 60 days before the voting day. While an exact date has yet to be determined, the Election Commission (EC) has confirmed its preparedness to conduct the polls whenever they are called.

Speaking to reporters at the EC headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka, Nasir Uddin emphasized the significance of completing key preparatory tasks before setting the election timetable. “The voter list must be finalized before the election schedule is announced. We are aiming to complete this task within June,” he said.

The CEC also highlighted ongoing efforts to update the voter list to include newly eligible voters. “We are considering changes to the voter registration law to ensure the inclusion of the younger generation. Those who have turned 18 will be registered,” he added.

Additionally, Nasir Uddin informed the media that the application period for political party registration will conclude on June 22. He stressed that several major tasks remain, including the redrawing of parliamentary constituency boundaries — a sensitive and often contested process that could have significant political implications.

When asked about coordination with the government, the CEC acknowledged the necessity of governmental dialogue and cooperation. “We need to understand the government’s position regarding the timing of the election. After discussions, a decision will be made accordingly,” he said. “If we get an indication from the government, we are ready to act.”

Although the EC is constitutionally mandated to operate independently, Nasir Uddin admitted that its capacity to ensure free and fair elections depends on active cooperation from the government. “No matter how independent the Election Commission is, elections cannot be held fairly without the government’s support,” he noted.

Referring to a recent political meeting in London, the CEC mentioned a joint statement that included commitments toward a fair electoral process. “The Chief Adviser has expressed his desire to hold a fair election. We welcome that statement and look forward to working in coordination,” Nasir Uddin said.

As the country prepares for another national vote amid heightened political tensions, the EC’s actions and transparency in the coming months will play a critical role in shaping public trust and ensuring electoral integrity.
