Bangladesh has taken a major step toward entering the nuclear energy era, as the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (BAERA) officially granted the commissioning license for fuel loading at the first unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP). The decision marks a critical milestone in the country’s long-term strategy to diversify its energy mix and enhance power security.

According to an official handout, the license was issued following a comprehensive assessment and review process conducted in line with both national regulations and international safety standards. The evaluation incorporated input from global nuclear oversight frameworks to ensure compliance with stringent operational and safety requirements.

BAERA Chairman Mahmudul Hasan formally handed over the license to Dr M Moinul Islam, Chairman of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission, on April 16. The ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant Construction Project as well as representatives from the Nuclear Power Plant Company Bangladesh Limited (NPCBL), the entity responsible for operating the facility.

The issuance of the license paves the way for the commencement of fuel loading activities at Unit 1, a process considered one of the most sensitive and technically demanding phases in nuclear plant commissioning. Officials indicated that a formal inauguration ceremony for the fuel loading is expected to take place in the final week of April.

Once fuel loading begins, the plant is projected to generate electricity within approximately three months, with initial power expected to be connected to the national grid shortly thereafter. This phased approach will include a series of operational tests and safety verifications to ensure stable and secure electricity generation.

Authorities have set a target to achieve full-capacity power transmission from Unit 1 by December, following the successful completion of testing and capacity-building stages. The development is expected to significantly strengthen Bangladesh’s energy infrastructure, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and imported energy sources.

The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, Bangladesh’s first nuclear energy project, is widely regarded as a transformative initiative. Upon completion, it is anticipated to play a crucial role in meeting the country’s growing electricity demand while supporting sustainable and low-carbon energy generation goals.

Officials emphasized that the project’s progress reflects Bangladesh’s commitment to adopting advanced energy technologies and ensuring long-term energy security through reliable and environmentally responsible solutions.
