The Government of Bangladesh has announced plans to name a suitable road in Dhaka after former Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, recognizing his longstanding contributions to strengthening relations between the two countries. The announcement was made by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman during a discussion in the National Parliament on July 15.

The proposal was initially raised by Leader of the Opposition Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, who suggested that the former Qatari ruler be honored with a road bearing his name in the capital city. Responding to the proposal, the Prime Minister informed Parliament that he had already given verbal instructions to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives to identify a suitable road under the Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) for the purpose.

Speaking in Parliament, Tarique Rahman thanked the opposition leader for bringing the issue forward and emphasized that honoring Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani would also serve as a tribute to the people of Qatar. He noted that Qatar has remained a trusted partner of Bangladesh over the years, contributing significantly to the country’s development and economic progress.

The Prime Minister highlighted Qatar’s important role in providing employment opportunities for millions of Bangladeshi workers. Remittances sent home by expatriate Bangladeshis employed in Qatar have become a vital source of foreign exchange and continue to make a meaningful contribution to the national economy.

He also recalled Qatar’s support during periods of regional instability. Referring to heightened tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and attacks targeting Qatar, Tarique Rahman said the Gulf nation ensured the safety and well-being of millions of Bangladeshi expatriates living there. According to the Prime Minister, Qatar treated Bangladeshi nationals with care and responsibility during those challenging times, reinforcing the strong bonds between the two countries.

In recognition of Sheikh Hamad’s contributions and his role in strengthening bilateral ties, Bangladesh observed a day of state mourning following his passing. National flags across the country were flown at half-mast as a mark of respect for the former Emir.

Former Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani passed away on Sunday at the age of 74, according to a statement issued by the office of the current Emir of Qatar. He served as Qatar’s Emir from 1995 to 2013, a period during which the country experienced rapid economic growth, major infrastructure development, and an increasingly influential role in regional and international affairs.

As part of Bangladesh’s official tribute, National Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram, traveled to Doha to convey the country’s condolences and express sympathy to the Qatari leadership and people.

The proposed naming of a Dhaka road after Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani symbolizes Bangladesh’s appreciation for Qatar’s friendship and the former Emir’s legacy. The initiative also reflects the importance both nations place on maintaining close diplomatic, economic, and people-to-people relations. Once implemented, the road will stand as a lasting reminder of the enduring partnership between Bangladesh and Qatar and the contributions of a leader widely respected for fostering cooperation and development.
