The Election Commission (EC) of Bangladesh has announced that the country’s updated final voter list will be published on August 31, as part of its preparations for upcoming local government elections. The initiative is aimed at ensuring that eligible citizens are included in the electoral roll while allowing sufficient time for corrections and verification before the final list is released.

According to the Election Commission, the process of updating the voter registry is already underway under the provisions of the Voter List Act, 2009. The Commission has fixed July 31, 2008, as the qualifying date for voter eligibility. This means that Bangladeshi citizens whose birthdays fall on or before July 31, 2008, and who are already enlisted in the EC’s database, will be eligible for inclusion in the updated voter list.

An EC spokesperson said the Commission had formally approved a detailed schedule covering the publication of the draft voter list, submission of claims and objections, correction of errors, verification procedures, and the release of the final electoral roll.

Senior Assistant Secretary of the Election Commission Md Nasir Uddin Chowdhury said the Commission had adopted the timeline to ensure transparency and accuracy throughout the updating process. A circular signed by Chowdhury outlined the key deadlines for election officials across the country.

According to the schedule, August 4 has been set as the deadline for preparing the updated draft voter list in PDF format and sending the electronic version to registration officers at the field level. The draft voter list will be published on August 9, allowing voters to examine their information and identify any errors or omissions.

The Commission has fixed August 24 as the final date for submitting claims, objections, and applications seeking corrections to voter information. During this period, citizens will have the opportunity to request amendments if they find inaccuracies in their personal details or discover that they have been omitted from the list despite meeting the eligibility criteria.

Election officials will then verify the submitted applications before making the necessary amendments. The deadline for incorporating approved corrections and decisions on claims and objections has been set for August 28.

Following the completion of this verification process, the final updated voter list will be officially published on August 31, providing the electoral roll that will be used for future local government elections.

To encourage public participation, the Election Commission has instructed field officials to undertake extensive awareness campaigns. According to the circular, announcements should be made before or after prayers through imams, priests, and other religious leaders at mosques, temples, churches, and other places of worship, urging citizens to inspect the printed draft voter list and report any inaccuracies.

The Commission has also directed local authorities to publicize the draft voter list through local media outlets and cable television operators to ensure that as many voters as possible are informed about the verification process.

Special attention will be given to correcting errors involving gender classification, religion, and other personal information. The EC said that if a female voter is mistakenly listed in the male voter register, or a male voter appears in the female register, appropriate corrections will be made after verification. Similarly, inaccuracies related to religion or any other personal details appearing in the printed draft list will also be rectified.

Election officials believe that the systematic review and verification process will improve the accuracy and credibility of the voter database, ensuring that eligible citizens can exercise their democratic right in upcoming local government elections.

The publication of the updated voter list marks another important step in the Election Commission’s preparations for future polls, with the Commission emphasizing transparency, public participation, and administrative efficiency throughout the voter registration and verification process.
