Tarique Rahman urges global action for Rohingya repatriation on World Refugee Day

BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has called on the international community to intensify diplomatic efforts to ensure the safe, dignified, and voluntary repatriation of Rohingya refugees currently living in Bangladesh. His appeal came on the occasion of World Refugee Day, observed globally on June 20.

In a Facebook post marking the day, Tarique Rahman expressed solidarity with millions of forcibly displaced people across the globe. He highlighted the gravity of the Rohingya crisis, which he said continues to strain Bangladesh’s resources and test its humanitarian resolve.

“For Bangladesh, this is not just a global crisis, but our daily reality,” he wrote. “Bangladesh’s commitment to the humanitarian responsibility to host more than 1.4 million Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar has been globally commended.”

Tarique Rahman emphasized that the burden of sheltering such a vast number of refugees is becoming increasingly difficult for Bangladesh to bear alone. He noted that the crisis, which has persisted since the mass influx of Rohingyas fleeing violence in Myanmar in 2017, remains one of the most serious humanitarian challenges in the world.

Calling for collective global action, BNP Acting Chairman urged the international community to ensure that all stakeholders play a responsible role in resolving the crisis. “The international community must ensure that all parties play a responsible role in resolving this crisis,” he said.

He also appealed to Bangladesh’s interim government to step up diplomatic pressure on Myanmar to create the necessary conditions for safe and voluntary returns. “The repatriation must be dignified and peaceful,” he added.

Concluding his message, Tarique Rahman called for renewed commitment from global and regional actors to uphold justice and human rights, and to help every refugee return to their homeland. His statement comes amid growing concerns that prolonged displacement could lead to further instability in the region.
