Bangladesh’s aspirations to hold the presidency of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) have gained significant momentum, thanks to the firm and unequivocal support of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Speaking to the media upon his return from Saudi Arabia, Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman highlighted that OIC member states are not only pledging their votes but are also committed to actively campaigning across the globe to ensure Bangladesh’s success in this prestigious international election.

The path to securing the UNGA presidency is both exciting and challenging. Bangladesh is entering the race at a relatively late stage, with barely three months left before the election on June 2, 2026. By contrast, Cyprus, the main competitor, has been campaigning consistently throughout the year, giving it a head start. Despite this short timeframe, the diplomatic support from the OIC offers Bangladesh a crucial advantage. Dr Rahman emphasized, “We have received their full and unequivocal support,” noting that this backing extends beyond formal votes to active advocacy on Bangladesh’s behalf in international forums.

The recent withdrawal of Palestine’s candidature, which was anticipated, has also cleared the path for Bangladesh to present itself as a strong contender for the 2026–2027 term. This development significantly improves Dhaka’s prospects, allowing it to concentrate on consolidating support among the Asia-Pacific Group and engaging strategically with other UN member states. The candidacy itself reflects Bangladesh’s renewed commitment to playing a more prominent role in global diplomacy and international governance.

Bangladesh’s representation at the UNGA has a proud history. The country last held the presidency in 1986–87, when former foreign minister Humayun Rashid Chowdhury was elected President of the 41st General Assembly. This historical achievement underscores Bangladesh’s capability to lead on a global platform, and the current bid signals an ambition to reaffirm that position. The election will be conducted at the UN Headquarters in New York in accordance with Rule 30 of the UNGA’s Rules of Procedure, following the established regional rotation system. The Asia-Pacific Group, to which Bangladesh belongs, will nominate the next president, making this a critical opportunity for the nation.

Dr Rahman’s visit to OIC member states was focused not only on securing their votes but also on engaging in detailed discussions about campaign strategies, regional cooperation, and ways to enhance Bangladesh’s diplomatic visibility. Adviser to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs, Humayun Kabir, described the response from OIC countries as “highly encouraging,” noting that the visit was both fruitful and productive. He added that while a detailed assessment will be conducted closer to the election, the feedback received so far has been overwhelmingly positive.

Beyond the UNGA race, Bangladesh continues to demonstrate a measured and principled approach to pressing regional issues. Dr Rahman expressed concern over rising tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan, warning that conflict would serve no one’s interests. He emphasized that Bangladesh is handling the situation with caution, refraining from making public statements, and instead attempting to facilitate dialogue in quiet diplomacy. Similarly, Dhaka has reiterated its firm stance on the Palestinian issue, highlighting its commitment to international law and human rights. These positions reinforce Bangladesh’s image as a responsible and principled actor on the global stage.

The OIC’s support is more than symbolic; it represents confidence in Bangladesh’s political stability, governance, and development trajectory under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. Leaders attending the recent OIC executive meeting expressed strong belief in Bangladesh’s ability to achieve sustained political stability and accelerated economic growth, while highlighting their backing for Dhaka’s UNGA candidacy. This combination of regional endorsement, historical credibility, and proactive diplomacy positions Bangladesh as a formidable candidate for the UNGA presidency.

As the election approaches, Bangladesh faces the task of leveraging this momentum to strengthen its international presence, cultivate support beyond the OIC, and communicate its vision for global cooperation effectively. The campaign is not merely about securing votes; it is an opportunity for Bangladesh to demonstrate its diplomatic maturity, strategic foresight, and commitment to contributing constructively to international dialogue. Success in this endeavor would not only be a personal triumph for Bangladesh’s leadership but also a reflection of the country’s growing stature in global affairs.

In these crucial months ahead, the challenge will be to translate OIC support into concrete electoral success. Through careful planning, diplomatic engagement, and proactive international campaigning, Bangladesh can solidify its position as a candidate capable of steering the UNGA with vision, inclusivity, and integrity. The world will be watching, and the stakes are high-but the opportunity to elevate Bangladesh’s role on the world stage has never been more tangible.
