Former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia is set to be honoured with the ‘Best Indomitable Woman in Advancing Democracy’ (Bengali: গণতন্ত্রের অগ্রযাত্রায় শ্রেষ্ঠ অদম্য নারী) award as part of this year’s International Women’s Day celebrations. The Ministry of Women and Children Affairs announced that the recognition will be conferred under the Indomitable Women Award 2026 programme. The award ceremony is scheduled to take place on March 8 at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka.

According to the ministry, Khaleda Zia is being recognised for her steadfast leadership in the struggle to restore democracy in Bangladesh, as well as her enduring efforts to safeguard the country’s democratic institutions. The award highlights her significant contributions to promoting political resilience and leadership in challenging times.

In addition to Khaleda Zia, five other distinguished women will be honoured across different categories. Nurun Nahar Akter will receive the award for her notable achievements in economic empowerment. In the field of education and employment, Most. Bobita Khatun is set to be recognised, while Nurbanu Kabir will be celebrated as a successful mother who has made a positive impact on her family and community.

Women who have overcome adversity and contributed to society will also be honoured. Most. Shamla Begum will be awarded for her resilience in overcoming trauma related to violence and successfully rebuilding her life. Most. Afroza Yasmin will receive recognition for her significant contributions in social development.

The annual Indomitable Women Award initiative aims to celebrate women who demonstrate resilience, leadership, and societal contributions across various spheres, marking International Women’s Day with a focus on inspiring stories of empowerment, courage, and service to society.

This year’s ceremony underscores the role of women leaders in shaping Bangladesh’s social, economic, and political landscape.
