Shahidur Rahman Tapa’s ‘Geopolitical Chessboard’ draws praise at home and abroad

A newly published book titled ‘Geopolitical Chessboard’, authored by veteran Bangladeshi politician and co-chairman of the Jatiya Party Shahidur Rahman Tapa, is drawing significant attention and commendation from readers at home and abroad.

The book, which reflects the author’s decades-long political experience and observations of international affairs, has already earned appreciation from prominent global figures. Among them is Smt. Sonia Gandhi, President of the Indian National Congress, who sent a formal congratulatory message wishing the publication success. The letter was reportedly issued from the official office of the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP).

In addition to the Indian political leadership, the Ambassador of Nepal to Bangladesh has also expressed appreciation for the book and its author. Messages of goodwill have likewise come from various domestic and international readers, reflecting growing interest in the work’s analysis of global political dynamics.

Speaking about the inspiration behind Geopolitical Chessboard, Tapa said the book was written in response to the rapidly changing landscape of world politics. He emphasized that shifting global power balances and intensifying tensions among major nations have created a new geopolitical reality that demands deeper public understanding.

According to Tapa, the global political order has entered a phase of uncertainty and restructuring following the election victory of Donald Trump in the United States. He believes this transformation has moved geopolitics beyond the exclusive domain of diplomats and policymakers, making it increasingly relevant to the daily lives of ordinary people.

“Geopolitics is no longer a subject of purely academic discussion,” Tapa noted. “It has become an unavoidable reality that influences everyone – from national leaders to working citizens.”

Drawing on nearly six decades of involvement in politics, he said his close observation of national, regional, and international developments shaped the central metaphor of the book: that global politics resembles a strategic chess game, where every move carries calculated intent and long-term consequences.

At its core, Geopolitical Chessboard examines the evolving strategic relationships among India, China, and Russia in relation to the United States. The book explores how competition and cooperation among these powers shape international stability and influence the future global order.

Tapa attempts to offer a concise analysis of how ongoing geopolitical tensions among these major actors could impact the broader world. While he underscores the growing importance of Asian powers – particularly India and China – he also acknowledges the continuing global influence of the United States.

Highlighting the importance of collective responsibility in maintaining peace, Tapa argues that sustainable global stability depends on recognizing all nations, large and small, as equal stakeholders in the international system. In this context, he stresses that even smaller states such as Bhutan must be considered integral members of the global community.

Through its strategic lens and accessible narrative, Geopolitical Chessboard seeks to make complex geopolitical realities understandable to a wider audience, positioning itself as both an analytical work and a reflection on the interconnected nature of modern world politics.
