Bangladesh is set to observe the 45th martyrdom anniversary of former President of Bangladesh, proclaimer of independence, Liberation War sector commander, founder of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), and pioneer of multi-party democracy, Ziaur Rahman, tomorrow with due respect and solemnity.

On May 30, 1981, President Ziaur Rahman was assassinated at the Chattogram Circuit House by a group of disgruntled army officers in what BNP leaders describe as a conspiracy involving both domestic and foreign elements. His death marked one of the most tragic and significant moments in the political history of Bangladesh. Every year, the day is observed by BNP and its associate bodies alongside people from different walks of life who remember his contribution to the nation.

To mark the occasion, BNP has announced an extensive eight-day programme running from May 25 to June 1 across the country. The programmes aim to pay tribute to the late leader and highlight his political ideals, nationalism, and contribution to democracy and state-building.

As part of the observance, special posters are being displayed nationwide from May 25 to June 1, while leaders and activists of the party are wearing black badges as a symbol of mourning and respect. Various newspapers and online news portals are also publishing special supplements focusing on the life, achievements, and political legacy of Ziaur Rahman.

According to the party’s announced schedule, on May 30 at 6:00 am, party flags will be kept at half-mast and black flags will be hoisted at BNP’s central office in Naya Paltan as well as at party offices throughout the country. Similar programmes will be observed in district, metropolitan, and grassroots-level party units nationwide.

At 11:00 am on the same day, BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will lead party leaders and activists in placing wreaths and offering prayers at the grave of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman. The grave premises are expected to witness a large gathering of party supporters and admirers paying tribute to the former president.

Following the wreath-laying ceremony, a Doa mahfil organized by Jatiyatabadi Olama Dal will be held at the graveyard. Special prayers will be offered seeking eternal peace for the departed leader and prosperity for the nation.

The party has also undertaken various humanitarian initiatives to mark the anniversary. Food items, clothing, rice, and lentils will be distributed among poor and underprivileged people in different areas of Dhaka North and South, as well as in district and local units throughout the country. BNP leaders said these programmes reflect the late president’s commitment to the welfare of ordinary people and social justice.

In addition to the commemorative activities on May 30, BNP will organize a discussion meeting on Sunday, May 31, at 2:00 pm at the auditorium of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) in Ramna, Dhaka. Senior party leaders, political analysts, intellectuals, and distinguished citizens are expected to participate in the event and discuss the political philosophy and national contributions of Ziaur Rahman.

Ziaur Rahman remains one of the most influential political figures in the history of Bangladesh. During the Liberation War of 1971, he emerged as a courageous military leader and one of the sector commanders. He commanded the famous Z Force and played a significant role in organizing resistance against Pakistani occupation forces.

He is widely remembered for announcing the declaration of Bangladesh’s independence during the early days of the Liberation War, a historic event that inspired the freedom fighters and the nation at a critical moment.

After independence, Ziaur Rahman entered politics and later founded the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which grew into one of the country’s largest and most influential political parties. His political ideology centered on Bangladeshi nationalism, self-reliance, economic development, and democratic governance.

Many political observers credit him with restoring multi-party democracy in Bangladesh during a crucial period in the country’s political evolution. For this reason, he is often referred to as the pioneer of multi-party democracy in Bangladesh.

Ziaur Rahman is also remembered for his contribution to regional diplomacy. He played a key role in conceptualizing and promoting regional cooperation in South Asia, which later led to the establishment of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).

The BNP founded by Ziaur Rahman has remained a major political force in Bangladesh for decades. Under the leadership of Tarique Rahman, the party secured victory in the 13th National Parliamentary Election held on February 12 and formed the government. With the support and trust of the people, BNP has now been entrusted with governing the country five times, including the current term.

As the nation observes the 45th martyrdom anniversary of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, supporters and admirers remember him as a patriot, freedom fighter, statesman, and visionary leader whose contributions continue to influence the political landscape of Bangladesh.
