Starlink launches high-speed satellite internet services in Bangladesh

Starlink, the satellite internet venture operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, has officially launched its services in Bangladesh, offering unlimited high-speed internet with speeds reaching up to 300 Mbps. The announcement came just 21 days after the company was licensed by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), fulfilling its commitment to commence operations within 90 days of approval.

Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant for the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, confirmed the development in a Facebook post. According to Taiyeb, Starlink representatives informed him via phone on May 19 that services had begun, and the company confirmed the launch publicly the next morning through its official account on X (formerly Twitter).

“Starlink has officially launched operations in Bangladesh,” Taiyeb wrote. “From today, customers in Bangladesh can start placing orders. This marks the realization of the Chief Adviser’s vision to launch the service within 90 days.”

The satellite-based internet provider is introducing two subscription plans initially: Starlink Residential and Residential Lite. The Residential package is priced at Tk 6,000 per month, while Residential Lite is available for Tk 4,200 per month. Both packages offer unlimited data without any speed or usage caps. However, customers are required to pay a one-time setup fee of Tk 47,000 for the equipment needed to access the service.

Starlink’s arrival marks a new chapter for Bangladesh’s internet landscape, particularly for remote and underserved regions where fiber-optic or broadband services remain unreliable or nonexistent. “Although relatively expensive, Starlink now provides a sustainable, high-quality, high-speed internet option for premium users,” said Taiyeb. He emphasized that the launch will benefit freelancers, entrepreneurs, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and businesses operating in rural or hard-to-reach areas.

“This service creates new opportunities for businesses to expand and ensures uninterrupted, year-round high-speed internet access,” Taiyeb added.

Starlink’s service operates via a constellation of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, allowing it to offer low-latency internet even in geographically challenging areas. With this rollout, Bangladesh joins a growing list of countries across Asia and beyond where Starlink aims to bridge the digital divide by expanding access to reliable internet.

The official X handle of Starlink posted on May 20: “Starlink’s high-speed, low-latency internet is now available in Bangladesh!”

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, who played a key role in fast-tracking the project, congratulated all those involved in bringing the service to fruition, according to Taiyeb.

While the initial costs may limit adoption to affluent users and organizations, experts say that Starlink’s presence could put pressure on local internet providers to improve their services, potentially sparking broader improvements in the sector.

For now, Starlink’s high-speed internet service offers a promising solution for those in search of reliable connectivity across Bangladesh’s urban, rural, and coastal regions.
