Around 60.43 percent of construction work on the metro rail extension from Motijheel to Kamalapur has been completed, with authorities aiming to finish the project by next year. The 1.16-kilometre stretch, part of the country’s first Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system, is being developed under MRT Line-6.

Officials from the project confirmed that work on the Motijheel–Kamalapur section is moving forward at a steady pace. “The physical work of the Motijheel–Kamalapur section metro rail project has been progressing fast,” a Metro Line-6 project official told BSS on Thursday.

According to project updates, significant milestones have already been achieved. The construction of all station columns for the section has been completed. Additionally, all 298 precast segments have been produced at the construction yard, ensuring smooth assembly on-site.

Progress is also visible in structural installations. Out of a total of 27 spans required for the extension, 17 have already been lifted into place. The casting of 180 metres of the concourse roof has been finished, along with the full 180 metres of track slabs and platform slabs. Moreover, all 824 precast parapet walls for the section have been installed.

The next stage will focus on installing the track and signaling systems. “Following the signing of agreements with contractors, the remaining works including track installation and signaling will be carried out,” the project director earlier stated.

The full MRT Line-6, stretching 21.26 kilometres from Uttara–Diabari through Mirpur, Farmgate, and Motijheel, will eventually connect to Kamalapur once the extension is complete. The commercial operation of the metro rail’s Uttara to Motijheel section began in November 2023, significantly reducing travel time across the capital and providing a modern, efficient alternative to Dhaka’s congested roads.

The Kamalapur station is expected to serve as a major transportation hub, integrating the metro rail with the central railway station and other public transport services. Officials believe the extension will not only improve connectivity but also boost economic activity in the surrounding areas.

Once operational, the entire Uttara–Kamalapur route is expected to transform urban mobility in Dhaka, offering faster, cleaner, and more reliable transport for thousands of daily commuters.
