Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transforming Bangladesh Police into a professional, accountable and service-oriented institution, saying the force must never function as a political instrument but instead become the people’s most trusted ally and a symbol of security.

Addressing the passing-out parade of the 27th BCS (Police) Batch, Phase-I at the Bangladesh Police Academy in Sardah on August 2, Saturday, the minister said ensuring public safety and developing a modern, skilled and humane police force remain among the government’s highest priorities. He noted that a series of reforms have been introduced to restore the morale and professionalism of the force following what he described as years of excessive politicisation under the previous administration.

Salahuddin Ahmed said the government has implemented a strict performance-based accountability system aimed at rewarding officers who demonstrate integrity, professionalism and bravery while ensuring disciplinary action against those found guilty of misconduct or violations of service rules.

Congratulating the newly commissioned Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs), he described their entry into the service as taking place at a defining moment in the country’s history. He urged the officers to uphold the rule of law impartially and provide equal treatment to every citizen regardless of political affiliation, social status or profession.

“From political activists to marginal farmers, every citizen is equal before the law. No one seeking police service should face discrimination,” the minister said.

He emphasized that discipline, adherence to the chain of command, loyalty and coordinated leadership are fundamental principles for building an effective and credible police force. He also stressed the growing importance of technology in modern policing, encouraging the new officers to strengthen their expertise in cybersecurity, digital forensics and the investigation of cybercrime.

Reiterating the government’s zero-tolerance policy against corruption, Salahuddin Ahmed called upon all members of the police to perform their duties with honesty, professionalism and dedication. He expressed confidence that the newly inducted officers would contribute meaningfully to Bangladesh Police by applying the knowledge, training and professional skills they have acquired over the years.

The minister further urged the officers to meet public expectations while carrying out their responsibilities in line with the spirit of the Liberation War and the sacrifices made during the 2024 student-led mass uprising.

Following his address, the Home Minister inspected the parade, received the ceremonial salute and presented awards to outstanding trainees. Dr. Md. Nurul Huda Bhuiyan was recognised as the Best Probationer and also received the Best in Field Activities award. ABM Mamun won the Best Shooter award, while Abu Numan Mohammad Khairul Islam earned the Best Academic Award.

The ceremony marked the formal induction of 58 officers into active service, including 57 officers from the 27th BCS (Police) Batch, Phase-I and one officer from the 28th BCS (Police) Batch.

Speaking to reporters after the programme, the Home Minister said the country’s overall law and order situation remains under control. Responding to questions about the recent recovery of two explosive-like objects in the capital, he said investigations are continuing and that the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit had safely neutralised the objects recovered in Ashulia and Motijheel.

He added that incidents of crime and sabotage remain comparatively low and assured that the government is maintaining heightened vigilance to ensure public safety.

Explaining the decision to issue a special security alert during August, Salahuddin Ahmed said authorities had directed law enforcement agencies to remain on heightened alert because the banned Awami fascist group traditionally observes political activities during the month. He said the precautionary measures are intended to maintain public order and prevent any potential acts of sabotage.
