Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi held his first official meeting with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday, marking an important step in ongoing diplomatic engagement between Dhaka and New Delhi. The courtesy call, held at the Prime Minister’s Office in the Secretariat at around 11:00am, focused on bilateral relations and a range of issues of mutual interest, according to officials.

Prime Minister’s Deputy Press Secretary Zahidul Islam Rony described the meeting as cordial and constructive, emphasizing that it was intended to strengthen communication and reinforce the longstanding relationship between the two neighbouring countries.

“It was a courtesy meeting. They discussed bilateral relations between the two countries and issues of mutual interest,” Rony said while briefing reporters after the meeting.

The discussion represented the first formal interaction between Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and High Commissioner Trivedi since the Indian diplomat assumed his new role in Dhaka earlier this year. Although officials did not disclose specific agenda items, the meeting is viewed as part of continued diplomatic efforts to maintain dialogue on regional cooperation, political engagement, economic ties, connectivity, trade, and other areas of shared interest.

Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman attended the meeting alongside the prime minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser, Humaiun Kobir, underscoring the significance of the engagement within the framework of Bangladesh’s foreign policy and its relations with India.

Trivedi was appointed as India’s 16th High Commissioner to Bangladesh in April, succeeding Pranay Kumar Verma. A veteran politician from the Indian state of West Bengal, Trivedi previously served as India’s railway minister as well as minister of state for health and family welfare. His extensive experience in public service and politics has been seen as an asset in managing one of India’s most important bilateral relationships in South Asia.

Since assuming office in Dhaka, Trivedi has been actively engaged in diplomatic outreach with senior Bangladeshi officials. Prior to his meeting with the prime minister, he held separate discussions with Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed as part of his efforts to deepen bilateral cooperation and maintain regular diplomatic consultations.

The latest meeting comes as both Bangladesh and India continue to emphasize the importance of sustained dialogue on matters of shared concern. The two countries maintain extensive cooperation across a broad range of sectors, including trade, energy, security, border management, connectivity, water resources, and people-to-people exchanges.

Diplomatic observers say high-level interactions such as Monday’s meeting play an important role in preserving communication channels and advancing cooperation between the neighbouring nations. While the meeting was described as a courtesy call, it also reflected the commitment of both governments to maintaining constructive engagement and addressing bilateral issues through regular dialogue.

Officials from both sides did not release additional details regarding future discussions or any specific agreements following the meeting.
