The United States has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening economic cooperation and expanding its broader partnership with Bangladesh, with US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Ambassador Sergio Gor describing closer bilateral engagement as a key priority for Washington.

The assurance came following Ambassador Gor’s meeting with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on August 1 during his first official visit to Bangladesh. According to a statement released by the US Embassy in Dhaka after the meeting, the discussions focused on enhancing economic ties and exploring new opportunities for cooperation between the two countries.

“Today, I had the opportunity to discuss with the Honorable Prime Minister Tarique Rahman the great opportunities between the US and Bangladesh to enhance economic cooperation and strengthen our partnership,” Gor said in the statement.

“This is a priority for the United States, and together we can achieve real success!” he added, emphasizing Washington’s interest in deepening engagement with Bangladesh across economic and strategic sectors.

Ambassador Gor’s remarks highlight the United States’ continued focus on expanding trade and investment opportunities with Bangladesh, one of South Asia’s fastest-growing economies. The meeting also reflected the shared interest of both governments in strengthening bilateral relations through increased economic collaboration and broader diplomatic cooperation.

The envoy arrived in Dhaka on July 30 for a three-day official visit aimed at reinforcing ties between the two countries. During his stay, he held a series of meetings with senior Bangladeshi officials to discuss issues of mutual interest and identify avenues for further cooperation.

Among his key engagements was a meeting with Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman, where both sides reviewed the current state of Bangladesh-US relations and exchanged views on ways to further enhance collaboration in areas including economic development, trade, investment, and regional cooperation.

Although details of the discussions were not publicly disclosed, the visit underscored the importance both governments attach to maintaining regular high-level dialogue and expanding cooperation in sectors that contribute to sustainable economic growth.

The United States remains one of Bangladesh’s major trading partners and a significant source of foreign investment. Bilateral relations have steadily expanded over the years, encompassing trade, development assistance, security cooperation, education, and people-to-people exchanges.

Washington has consistently expressed support for Bangladesh’s economic progress and its growing role in regional and global markets. Strengthening commercial ties and encouraging greater private-sector investment have remained central pillars of the bilateral relationship.
