India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a historic victory in the eastern state of West Bengal, dramatically reshaping the political landscape of one of the country’s most influential regions. The party announced senior leader Suvendu Adhikari as the next chief minister on May 8, following the BJP’s overwhelming win in the state assembly elections.

The BJP, led nationally by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, captured 207 out of 294 seats in the legislative assembly, marking the party’s first-ever victory in West Bengal. The result represents a major breakthrough for the BJP in a state that had long been dominated by regional political forces and viewed as one of the strongest bastions of opposition politics in India.

The announcement of Adhikari as chief minister came after a meeting of newly elected BJP legislators in Kolkata. India’s Interior Minister Amit Shah told reporters that the decision was made unanimously by party members. Adhikari is scheduled to take the oath of office on Saturday, according to state BJP president Samik Bhattacharya.

The victory is being seen as one of the BJP’s most significant political achievements since Modi first became prime minister in 2014. Analysts say the win demonstrates the party’s ability to expand beyond its traditional strongholds in northern and central India into linguistically and culturally distinct regions such as West Bengal.

The elections were held in April and May across five Indian states and territories, with vote counting conducted under heavy security arrangements. Tensions remained high throughout the campaign, particularly in West Bengal, where opposition parties and civil society groups accused authorities of unfairly removing millions of names from voter rolls under the pretext of eliminating ineligible voters. Critics argued that the process disproportionately affected minority and marginalized communities.

Violence erupted shortly after the results were announced, leaving at least five people dead. Among those killed was a close aide to Suvendu Adhikari, who was reportedly shot near his residence in Kolkata during clashes between rival political supporters. Authorities have increased security in several districts amid fears of further unrest.

The BJP’s triumph also marks the end of the long rule of Mamata Banerjee and her regional party, which had governed West Bengal since 2011. Banerjee, known for her fiery political style and strong grassroots support, had emerged over the years as one of Modi’s most prominent national rivals.

Beyond West Bengal, the BJP also retained power in the northeastern state of Assam for a third consecutive term and remained part of the ruling coalition in the union territory of Puducherry.

However, the election results were mixed for the BJP nationally. In the southern state of Kerala, the opposition Congress-led alliance secured a major victory. Meanwhile, in Tamil Nadu, actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay achieved a remarkable political debut with his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), emerging as the single largest party in the state assembly.

TVK won 108 seats in the 234-member legislature, falling short of an outright majority. Nevertheless, local media reports indicated that Vijay had gained support from two communist parties and the Congress party, potentially enabling him to form the next government. The development signals a major shift in Tamil Nadu politics and positions Vijay as a rising force in India’s political arena.

The broader election outcome strengthens Modi’s political standing ahead of India’s 2029 general election, despite ongoing economic concerns, including high unemployment and sensitive foreign policy challenges such as negotiations over a trade agreement with the United States.
