US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gor is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka today for a three-day official visit that is expected to underscore the growing strategic importance of Bangladesh in Washington’s South Asia policy.

According to diplomatic sources, Gor’s visit will focus on strengthening bilateral relations, reviewing regional developments and discussing Bangladesh’s evolving foreign policy priorities amid a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape.

On the first day of his visit, the US envoy is expected to hold separate meetings with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman. The discussions are likely to cover a broad range of issues, including political and economic cooperation, regional stability, security challenges and future engagement between Dhaka and Washington.

Officials familiar with the visit said Bangladesh’s increasingly prominent role in South Asia will be a major subject of discussion. Washington is closely monitoring Dhaka’s expanding diplomatic engagement with key global powers, particularly following the prime minister’s visit to China in June, Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman’s subsequent visit to Moscow and the recent trip to Dhaka by Turkey’s foreign minister. The talks are expected to explore how these developments fit into Bangladesh’s broader foreign policy strategy while reaffirming the importance of its partnership with the United States.

Diplomatic sources also indicated that Sergio Gor may convey messages from the administration of President Donald Trump to Bangladesh’s leadership if required. Although officials have not disclosed the specific content of those communications, they are expected to reflect Washington’s priorities regarding regional cooperation, economic engagement and security issues in South Asia.

On the second day of his visit, Gor is scheduled to travel to Cox’s Bazar, where he will assess the humanitarian situation facing the Rohingya refugees. The visit is expected to include meetings with officials involved in refugee management as well as representatives of humanitarian organisations working in the camps. The United States has remained one of the largest contributors of humanitarian assistance for the displaced Rohingya population, and the envoy’s visit is expected to reaffirm Washington’s continued support for international relief efforts.

The visit comes at a time when Bangladesh is seeking to deepen its engagement with multiple international partners while maintaining a balanced foreign policy. Analysts believe Dhaka’s strategic location at the crossroads of South and Southeast Asia, combined with its growing economic influence, has increased its importance in regional diplomacy.

Sergio Gor’s trip marks the third visit by a senior US official from Washington since the BNP-led government assumed office in February.  for South and Central Asian Affairs Paul Kapur visited Bangladesh in March, followed by Assistant US Trade Representative for South and Central Asia Brendan Lynch in May.

Diplomatic observers say the succession of high-level visits reflects sustained engagement between the two countries and signals Washington’s continued interest in expanding cooperation with Bangladesh on regional security, trade, humanitarian issues and broader strategic affairs. The outcomes of Gor’s meetings in Dhaka are expected to shape the next phase of bilateral dialogue as both countries seek to strengthen their partnership amid shifting regional dynamics.
